Lubricants for Engine Dynamometer Bearings

Power Test engine dynamometers have two different lubrication points on them: the high speed bearings and the trunion bearings. There are also two different types of lubrication systems for the high speed bearing that have been used on Power Test engine dynos over the years: oil and grease.

High Speed Bearing

Engine Dynamometers that use an oil lubrication system for the high speed bearings will have an oil cup at each end of the dynamometer. If your dynamometer has oil cups you will need to use SAE 30 NON DETERGENT oil in the high speed bearing.

Engine Dynamometers that use a grease lubrication system for the high speed bearing will have a grease zerk at the top center of the bearing cover. If your dynamometer has a grease zerk in this location you will need to use a synthetic grease such as Mobile Mobilith SHC™ 100 in the high speed bearing.

Trunion Bearing

The trunion bearing will have two grease zerks on the face of the bearing cover.

Engine Dynamometers with an oil lubrication system (oil cup) for the high speed bearings will use a standard grease such as Valvoline multi-purpose grease in the trunion bearing.

Engine Dynamometers with a grease lubrication system (grease zerk) for the high speed bearings will use a synthetic grease such as Mobile Mobilith SHC™ 460 in the trunion bearing.
