Challenge:
A large oil and gas customer was developing new technology for Down-Hole Directional Drilling Motors (TS-DHDDM). They required a precision test stand to prove their designs. The stand had to have extremely high-speed reaction and data, as well as have four individually controlled motoring/loading motors.  They needed the motors to automatically simulate the forces the DHDDM would see in operation.

Solution:
Power Test Engineered Solutions division developed a 4-motor nested dynamometer design that could operate four individual speed or torque controls while featuring an inside and outside driven motor. The test stand’s design is able to test a variety of TS-DHDDM lengths and diameters. It has a steel guarding safely covering the test article during testing. In addition, the test article has locked rotating support wheels. Steering control and power unit loading simulates with the absolute encoders able to clock any shaft with respect to any other while under high torque load and operating at slow to high speeds. A 5000HZ control and data acquisition system operated the system manually or automatically to test the DHDDMs produced and collect the required data.
